‘Ten times Ritmo is 10 times 10 fond memories, 10 thousand gleaming faces. I usually scan the faces at concerts; the joy, the tears, the wonder, the curiosity. These faces, your faces are what brighten up my Ritmo memories. It’s the tenth time, let it all in, let’s dance, cry, laugh and wonder together!’
Balázs Weyer
‘I love it when they love it’ Balázs expressed the team’s joy over the audience’s reactions to the handpicked gigs of Ritmo.’

As the festival of musical discovery, Ritmo has always supported up-and-coming bands and young talent. The showcase stage is a key element of Ritmo, hosting artists from our region and beyond, inspired by heritage and creating something new and original.
Ritmo treaures the Roma musical heritage of the East- Central European region, and especially Hungary. One of the most memorable Ritmo moments was when a 20-stong group of eminent Roma musicians of all ages showed us the strength and beauty of their tradition: songs you would normally only hear at their homes. This was Roma Ritmo, a unique and spellbinding production in 2018.
‘Ritmo has evolved from small scale event to a multi-venue, multi format festival attracting a growing number of pros and the public, noted internationally. It was great to watch, and be part of this growth.’
Szilvia Bellay
From the prestigious halls of the Palace of Arts out to the streets, from outdoor stages in major cities to Budapest cult venues: Ritmo has captured audiences in many shapes and places.
RITMO Award was founded to praise the experts who have done – quietly, in the background – immeasurably much for world music. Every year we present the award to a different industry expert who furthered the reputation of regional world music.
‘The crew always has their revelative moments: ecstatic dance at BCUC, crying over Gerald Toto or hugging during Fanfara Station.’
Sára Venczel
‘Seasoned music professionals came out crying from Mónika Lakatos’s concert. That was a special moment.’
András Lelkes
‘The Ritmo vibe connects the curious crowd and our lovely artists: you can meet, chat and party with the artists as well.’
Márton Sütheő
‘I spotted the members of Klapa Osjak among the hustle and bustle of Szimpla Kert – we invited them to perform in Budapest after shooting a documentary with them two years prior. Though the Dalmatian melodies were plucked from their natural habitat, they swept everyone off of their feet, even without any seashore in sight. At the premiere of the movie even my grandmother shed some tears.’
Anna Fazekas
Ritmo brings the artists real close. One of our favourites, Chassol shared his complex ideas on the relationship between image and sound, Béla Bartók and more on camera.
Ritmo welcomes music from all parts of the world, having hosted artist from over 100 countries. Sometimes the bands themselves are a multilingual melting pot: the three members of Fanfara Sation united 3 continents: North American, Italian and Tunisian music.
Sometimes the smallest places store the most wonderful stories: Sounds and Stories from Ruhnu Island is the love project of 4 Estonian musicians. This island is the smallest ever place to have featured at Budapest Ritmo.
When artists turn audience: Hungarian bare-footed folk diva Bea Palya enjoyed a Portuguese band at Ritmo in full stage gear, just before her own main stage gig.
A musical meeting that resulted in an album: Félix Lajkó and Vołosi fused Hungarian and Polish string heritage, creating new, magical music.
It’s not everyday, you hear active rebels perform, but Ritmo has seen a few: Tamikrest stand for the Tamasheq cause and play hypnotic desert rock – they came on stage after a 10-year hiatus at the 2023 edition of Ritmo.
The band who still plays weddings back home in Mali, made thousands dance at Glasto and did the first sold-out main hall gig at Ritmo – Amadou & Mariam hold a special place in our hearts.
Covid set off a new wave – of Ritmo & cinema, or where the two meet. Ritmo films were created by talented cinematographers inspired by, and co-creating with music, the result: music films offering as much, just different than live music.
Vincent Moon and Dalinda’s joint project simply jumps between the realms of reality and film. The hybrid concert and film experience of this live cinema performance is one that will be remembered for a long time to come.
Unique and joyful experiences have always been a central part of the Ritmo conference. One of the most memorable moments was when Árpád Tóth, the charismatic conductor and choir leader made the whole audince sing at his opening talk; demonstrating the uniting power of communal music that despite a having a 100 subcultures, it connects us all over the world.
‘When we got the green light, we got so excited we had to find a name immediately, as in’let’s wrap this up and go home’ at 9pm. Slouched on the office sofa, surrounded by the banners of our previous festival, armed with dictionaries we started brainstorming. When we hit upon ‘Ritmo’, I knew we had it straight away, and that it was going to be great. Well, it turned out even better.’
